  Generally called as “Zhi,” combs were one of the eight hair ornaments in ancient China. An old saying goes: Yangzhou-made rouge and Suzhou local flowers are highly famed, but Changzhou-made combs are the best in China. Changzhou-made combs were originated from Jin Dynasty (AD 265-420), and have enjoyed a long history of above 1,600 years. Dating back to Qing Dynasty, Changzhou used to customize high-class combs for the royal families; therefore, Changzhou-made combs were also reputed as “Royal Combs.” As a sort of traditional handicrafts of Changzhou, combs were also known as the “Specialty of Yanling.”

    Brick Sculpture Screen

  Brick sculpture screen is a kind of carving artwork that sculptures the bricks in Ming and Qing dynasties with drawings and handwriting characters in the Han dynasty style, decorated with exquisite seat panel and hanging panel made of carved mahogany. The brick sculpture screen is light in weight, small in size and easy to carry. It looks antique and elegant in appearance, strong and powerful as shown in the Han-style inscriptions, having very high artistic value.

  Cloisonné Article

    Cloisonné was also called “copper-body and wire-inlaid enamel.” The manufacture of cloisonné articles requires an elaborate and complicated process, including base hammering, copper-wire curving, soldering, enamel filling, polishing and gilding. Adopting modern technology and color techniques, the picture of cloisonné article is clear, novel, colorful and stereoscopic.      

    Random Stitch Embroidery

  The art of random stitch embroidery was created in 1920s by Madam Yang Shouyu, the cousin of China’s contemporary art master Mr. Liu Haisu. Yang innovated on the traditional method of embroidery by replacing brush and ink with stitch and using threads as colors, which perfectly combines the principles of Western paintings with Chinese embroidery. The “random” is actually a kind of random with certain principle and rules, and “random” is used to serve a unification of the whole and a change for liveliness. 

    Chinese Color Velvet Painting

  Chinese Color Velvet Painting is an emerging kind of Chinese folk arts and crafts, which was created by Mr. Zong Baiyi (Changzhou Color Velvet Painting Research Institute) in 1972. The manufacture of velvet painting combines traditional craftsmanship with modern materials and art, uses wool, acrylic, nylon and similar materials as the colors, and adopts a variety of processes such as scratching, brushing, tearing, pasting, sticking and heaping. Integrating painting, relief, mosaic and other techniques, the velvet painting has unique style, vivid images, strong stereo sense and rich colors.


    Green-Retaining Bamboo Carving

    The distinguishing feature of green-retaining bamboo carving is that the carving part is only limited on a very thin skin of the bamboo surface. As a precious traditional art crafts of Changzhou, green-retaining bamboo carving requires meticulous workmanship and exquisite skills, and the crafts were very much adored by the imperial families. In modern times, green-retaining bamboo carving has been awarded gold or silver medals for many times at national arts and crafts fairs.
